April Junior's Playscheme, Forest School & Trips

We had a great turnout for April Playscheme, which was funded by HAF and provided free places and meals for hundreds of children throughout the holidays. We covered lots of different themes where we play games, take part in activities and complete crafts:

April Fools & Health Care Day, Appreciation Day, Easter, Silly Party, Giggles in the Garden, Creative Day and Young voices.

We enjoyed a fun-tastic trip to White Post Farm, where we saw lots of farm animals and got to feed them too! We played on the park and enjoyed a packed lunch in the sunshine.

On the second week of Playscheme, we enjoyed a day out at Forest School! We have had trip up into the woods and learnt how to tie some knots 🪢and also put the skills to the test to make some dens in the woods! We also collected some resources such as sticks and leaves to build bug hotels in the afternoon, then to end the day off we played some outdoor games using things such as the parachute.

BBC East Midlands TV Visit

ree

In April, we featured on BBC East Midlands, who were reporting on the affects of benefit cuts in our local community. They came to visit The Social Action Hub and focused on The Social Supermarket’s support to families and individuals.

Find out more about The Social Supermarket’s expansion here

ree

The BBC also reported on Daisy Dady, who has been working with us for the past 5 years since COVID Lockdown, and has seen & made many changes in the organisation. As her position crept up to management from starting by working with young people at the school holiday club, she has faces many challenges with being mistreated and patronised due to her age.

BBC Radio Nottingham Interview

ree

Daisy gave us a preview of the line of work that comes with working in the community and why she has so much passion for her role.

BBC Radio Nottingham interviewed her in regards to out demand tripling since October and wanted more understanding about why this has occurred.

School Uniform Project

ree

This initiative started when local teachers highlighted the fact parents are struggling with the rising cost of living & being able to afford brand new uniform for their children. To tackle this, we have partnered with local schools to support parents with uniform costs, and to provide funding our free youth clubs & projects that local children attend simultaneously.

This exchange provides a collaborative & supportive environment for parents to access support, and be signposted to other services they may need access to such as: The Social Supermarket, Emergency Food Parcels, The Chatty Cafe, Courses & Events

We will be providing a wide range of uniform donated by the schools, which vary in size, quality, logos/branding (or plain), including some brand new items & some second hand. The prices of these items match the quality of the product. We are offering uniform up to 95% off it’s RRP 🤩 which is extremely good value for money!

All funds raised goes towards youth projects such as: Juniors Youth Club, Seniors Youth Club, The Youth Community Fridge, Trips & Activities and other future projects and activities. We currently have stock from The Python Hill Academy & Lake View Primary School.

Blidworth Oaks are supporting this project & currently give away lost property for free on their site ❤️ To donate old uniform, this can be donated directly to The Social Action Hub or may be able to be left with the school dependant on staff availability. Either contact your child’s school directly or email info@socialactionhub.com / call 01623 490498

These items are available in The Social Supermarket 😊 Any additional donations will be extremely appreciated ❤️ Thank you to everyone involved from the schools who made this possible!

Knit & Natter at The Chatty Cafe

We decided to switch things up at The Chatty Cafe, and held a Knit & Natter! It was great to see new faces and make new connections within the community. We all had a go at knitting something nice whilst enjoying a free cuppa & pastry:)

Please note, our opening hours have changed slightly at the moment. Read more here

Too Good To Waste - Pop-up Shop

We have been fortunate enough to be able to run a few different pop-up shops in the past few months, which reduces food waste after The Social Supermarket closes on a Thursday. The food we get donated is surplus already, and sometimes have short dates. To reduce the food waste, we offer 'as much as you like for £1' via our Pop-up shop on available Fridays

To see updates on our next pop-up shop, please join our Team Foodshare Facebook Group

Barclays Banking Advice at The Chatty Cafe

Barclays came to one our Chatty Cafe sessions and offered free advice about banking, scams, protection, and other areas that service users had interest in. On this day we had a children's toy swap, where members of the community swapped their old children's toys of good quality with new ones to promote recycling & re-gifting.

Women for Women

In the past few months, The Social Action Hub have been in partnership with Women for Women and have hosted a few meetings at the hub. What is women for women? - We’re a support group for women, run by women. Whether you’re looking for support, friendship or something to get involved in, we can be that safe space. Somewhere that you can safely share or discuss without judgement. Or simply listen. Absolutely no pressure at all. Please share the group wide and far. Let’s reach out to as many women that need a safe space.

Currently, we run 1 session in Blidworth at St Andrew's Mission Hall and 1 in Rainworth at The Social Action Hub every month.

OB Project Start

ree

Introducing the OB Project - This is part of The Treehouse Project and aims to reduce mental health issues with boys in the local area who need someone to talk to & to listen to their issues 💙

In response to the tragic loss of an amazing young man Owen Brooks - Forever 16 🕊️💙

We have named the project after him. The first meeting was held in June and planned a memorial for OB to be hosted during Seniors Youth Club, which supports some of his friends who wasn’t able to attend the funeral & support young people in celebrating his life during this sad time 💙

Going forward, the meetings will be held once a month on the 3rd Thursday of the month 5pm-6pm to talk about mental health issues & any problems boys are experiencing that they feel they need to voice - together we can talk though things & strengthen connections within the community 🤝

Maria has set up a fundraiser which some of will be for this project, which will go towards the resources & running of the OB Project’s activities and events - please donate to support the cause 😇

The logo was designed by a young person at our Seniors Youth Club & had many other young people kindly contributing to the ideas for the poster & logo 😊

Girls for Girls Start

ree

Introducing our new Girls for Girls Mental Health Group 🧡🌺🤝 a part of The Treehouse Project (tagged in the comments) We recognise there aren’t many opportunities for young women and girls to come together & talk about issues they have in their life - to be heard & understood by each other 🧡

Because every girls deserves to feel heard, valued & strong 💪🌺

Join us for a safe & supportive space with no judgement and support from mentors to cope with self esteem, confidence & empowerment! Meetings held monthly on 3rd Thursday of the month 😊🧡

Summer Family Fiesta

In June, our young volunteers group held an event to raise funds for the OB Project (click here to read more about this project) where they ran their own stalls such as: Face painting, nail painting, glitter cheeks, raffles, lucky dip & other games.

The young people worked extremely hard in planning, preparing and running this event, ages ranging fro 12yrs old - 16yrs old. We had around 15 young volunteers attend and help out at the event.

We raised around £200 for the OB Project! Thank you to our amazing community for supporting the event & the amazing project.

Food Waste Milestone - Volunteer's Week

The Social Action Hub, based in Rainworth, has been a cornerstone of community support since 1993. Initially established as the Detached Youth Project in response to the social and economic challenges following local pit closures, it has evolved into a multifaceted charity addressing various community needs. The Social Action Hub volunteers have increased since last year and we now have over 40 amazing volunteers, Ages starting from 11 up to 75!! How fantastic! Volunteers are integral to the Hub’s operations, contributing to a range of programs:

Team Foodshare: Launched in 2017, this initiative redistributes surplus food from over 70 store pickups weekly, providing emergency food parcels and operating a Social Supermarket™. In the past year alone, the Hub has redistributed 135.3 tonnes of food, preventing 67.65 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. Our Social Supermarket now has 1006 active members, from across Rainworth and Blidworth. Through Team Foodshare, we provided 4,461 food baskets—equivalent to 62,454 meals—and provided 662 emergency food parcels to vulnerable residents.

During holidays, we also provided 2,475 nutritious meals for children as part of HAF. This is equivalent to the weight of the largest mammal on planet earth... THE BLUE WHALE!!!

ree

Team Foodshare services include: 🛒 The Social Supermarket 📦 Emergency Food Parcels ☕️ The Chatty Cafe 🥪 The Youth Community Fridge 🍎 Free Meals for Playscheme 🍳 Cooking courses

Young People’s Services: Supporting youth clubs and the Forest School, providing guidance and mentorship to young people. Our youth provision served 272 unique young people, offering consistent, safe, and engaging spaces for social, emotional, and skill-based development. Including young volunteers who are a part of a young leaders group who support other young people's services and Foodshare Services. 50% of our volunteers are young people under the age of 25!

Young People’s services include: 🎨 Juniors Youth Club & Playscheme ⚽️ Seniors Youth Club & Playscheme 🌲 Forest School 🍄 Young Leader’s Programme 🪪 C-CARD - Sexual Health & Relationship 🧠 The Treehouse Project 🎽 The School Uniform Project 📚 Alternative Provision Across all services, we reached over 1,679 individuals, supporting them through initiatives tackling food insecurity, mental health, employment barriers, childcare needs, youth provision, and environmental awareness. 💼

Volunteer Opportunities & Good stories

Over this year we have launched some new projects which have made a huge impact thanks to our Volunteers!! The Social Action Hub offers diverse volunteering roles to suit various interests and skills:

Food Distribution: Assist in collecting, sorting, and distributing food parcels to those in need. In the Social Supermarket, volunteers play vital roles either as store assistants or store collectors. Store assistants support customers with their shopping and offer a friendly face, helping reduce the stigma around food club services. Store collectors gather donations from stores in Rainworth, Blidworth, and nearby areas. Thanks to their efforts, we can offer food to those in need, fight food poverty, and reduce food waste by rescuing surplus items from going to landfill.

Youth Engagement: Support youth clubs and the Forest School, providing guidance and mentorship to young people. We have our young leaders programme, which is thriving, It all started last year when a handful of young people came to us for work experience and since then flourished and are now part time volunteers working after school and in the holidays, and WOW they are amazing. We set them up with 121s, work couching, CV building, but also, we are building up their confidence ready for big wide world. For example they are working with the community in The Social Supermarket, litter picks, car boots, and also working within our youth club, setting up and running activities and being part of our session planning to see what goes on behind the scenes. And we can truly say everyone in our young volunteer’s program are amazing and we appreciate how much they do and how far they have come.

Community Events: Help organize and run events like social eating gatherings and the Chatty Café sessions, promoting social interaction and community cohesion (litter picks, carboots and walk & talks) We still run our Chatty Café, which volunteers create a warm and welcoming environment for anyone that attends. They serve tea, coffee, juice, and sweet treats, while offering friendly conversation and a listening ear. We have recently begun to hold knitter n Knatter themed sessions with a lovely group of ladies, plus we hold a tombola, so be sure to look out when our next one is and pop down! The numbers have doubled since this last year and that’s all thanks to our fantastic volunteers giving us great ideas of how we can make the chatty café that bit more chattier. Last year we ran multiple events for the community such as litter picks, walk & talks and car boot sales. We’d like to thank our volunteers & members of the public that have volunteered their time to support our community & our Chairty. Hundreds of members of the community have volunteered hours of their time for others!

Administrative Support: Contribute to the behind-the-scenes operations, including fundraising campaigns and outreach efforts. Volunteering not only benefits the community but also offers personal growth opportunities ❤️ Please contact us on 01623 490498 or email info@socialactionhub.com Thanks ❤️

Room Hire Rates:  £15 per hour / £10 per hour for charity & good causes

£5 extra for kitchen use

If you are looking to hire, please email info@socialactionhub.com or call 01623 490498 to see availability.

Animal Food Bin

To make our food go even further, we put all of the food no longer fit for human consumption in our 'animal food bins'.

The bins are clearly labelled with their contents 'Bread & Pastries' and 'Fruit & Vegetables'.

Anyone is free to collect food from the animal food bins at the collection times:

Monday - Friday 9am-4pm

The bins are located outside of The Social Supermarket in front of the grey gates.

Too Good To Waste - Pop Up Shop

On selected Fridays when we have excess food from The Social Supermarket (usually fruit & veg and bread & pastries), we hold a pop up shop.

It is £1 for as much as you like

Available from 11am-1pm

This service is a part of our FoodShare scheme, tackling food poverty and preventing food waste. We try to make all of our food go further, as it is 'too good to waste'!

As the pop up shop is only available on selected days, please join our Facebook Group for updates.

Thank you for reading!

During the months between our newsletters, we will post shorter blogs like this so we can share all of the great things our community has been up to recently.

Our next newsletter will be the 'Autumn Newsletter' which will be posted march time.
