Business Manager – Retail, Food, Warehousing & Distribution


27.5 hours per week

£26,325–£31,200 per annum, pro rata

Based in Rainworth, Nottinghamshire


The Social Action Hub is looking for a confident, practical and highly organised Business Manager to lead our Retail, Food, Warehousing & Distribution Business Division.

This is a varied senior management role with responsibility for:

  • The Social Supermarket and Grow Together Garden;

  • Team Foodshare;

  • Revive Zero Waste Store;

  • the School Uniform Project;

  • Chatty Café and Youth Community Fridge;

  • warehousing, stock control and distribution;

  • food collections, deliveries and redistribution;

  • Rainworth Youth & Community Centre and Social Supermarket facilities.


You will lead a team of co-ordinators, Shift Leads, staff and volunteers, ensuring that services are safe, efficient, welcoming and delivered to consistently high standards.


About the role


Our Retail, Food, Warehousing & Distribution services help reduce food waste, by over 80 tonnes a year, tackles food poverty, increases access to affordable, nutritional goods and essential items, support sustainable living and provides dignified support to local people.


As Business Manager, you will take responsibility for the overall performance of this division. You will establish effective systems, delegate responsibilities clearly, develop staff and volunteers, monitor budgets and performance, and make sure that services remain compliant and responsive to community need.


You will oversee food collections, stock systems, retail operations, customer service, warehouse activity, distribution, facilities and service quality. You will also work with Corporate Services to monitor income, expenditure, stock performance, KPIs and impact.

The postholder will act as The Social Action Hub’s:


  • Food Hygiene Lead;

  • Health and Safety Lead;

  • Deputy Safeguarding Lead.


You will also contribute to the Senior Leadership Team, supporting organisational planning, performance, quality assurance and continuous improvement.


Who we are looking for


You do not need to have worked previously for a charity or social enterprise.

We are interested in applicants with strong management and operational experience gained within areas such as:


  • food retail or supermarkets;

  • warehousing and distribution;

  • hospitality;

  • logistics;

  • multi-service retail;

  • facilities or venue management;

  • another busy customer-facing operation.


You will need to demonstrate experience of:

  • leading and developing staff;

  • managing several services or operational functions;

  • organising rotas and maintaining effective service cover;

  • managing stock, storage, deliveries or distribution;

  • monitoring budgets and financial performance;

  • maintaining high standards of customer service;

  • developing and implementing operational procedures;

  • managing risk, quality and compliance;

  • working with suppliers, contractors and external partners;

  • producing clear reports and management information.


You will be a calm and confident leader who can set clear expectations, delegate effectively and address problems promptly.


You must also be able to support the charitable purpose of our services and treat customers and beneficiaries with dignity and respect.


Essential requirements


Applicants must have:

  • substantial experience of managing people and operational services;

  • sound knowledge of food hygiene and workplace Health and Safety;

  • strong organisational and problem-solving skills;

  • good literacy, numeracy and IT skills;

  • the ability to work with financial, stock and performance information;

  • strong written and verbal communication skills;

  • the ability to travel between service locations, suppliers, meetings and collection points;

  • flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends.


A current Food Hygiene qualification is required, or must be completed before or immediately following appointment. The successful candidate will also be expected to complete appropriate Health and Safety, Deputy Safeguarding Lead and mandatory organisational training.


An appropriate DBS check and satisfactory employment references will be required.


Working arrangements


Hours: 27.5 hours per week

Usual working pattern: Monday to Friday, normally between 9.00am and 3.00pm, with exact hours agreed according to operational need

Salary: £26,325–£31,200 per annum, pro rata

Location: Rainworth Youth & Community Centre and The Social Supermarket, Kirklington Road, Rainworth

Probationary period: Three months

The role includes occasional evening and weekend work to support collections, events, wraparound services and operational supervision.

This is a senior leadership role with responsibility for:


  • Finance administration and financial controls;

  • Human Resources systems;

  • reception and administration;

  • marketing and communications;

  • data and performance reporting;

  • Microsoft 365, SharePoint and digital systems;

  • policies, procedures and Standard Operating Procedures;

  • organisational performance;

  • quality assurance;

  • compliance and continuous improvement.


The postholder will also act as the organisation’s:

  • GDPR Lead;

  • Financial Control Lead;

  • Safeguarding Lead;

  • Business Systems Lead;

  • Deputy CEO when formally designated on duty.


About the role


The Business Support & Performance Division provides the systems, information and organisational support that enable every part of The Social Action Hub to operate safely, efficiently and sustainably.


As Business Manager, you will lead the Business Support Team and ensure that managers, staff and volunteers have the information, systems, procedures and support needed to deliver high-quality services.


You will oversee finance, HR, administration, marketing, data and business systems while monitoring performance across the organisation.


You will also provide a second line of assurance by checking that operational plans, statutory requirements, policies, quality standards and agreed actions are being implemented and evidenced by the charity’s service-delivery teams.


This role is not about personally processing every administrative task. It is about creating effective systems, delegating appropriately, supporting managers and ensuring the organisation remains accurate, compliant and well managed.


Key responsibilities


You will:

  • lead the development and monitoring of organisational operational plans;

  • produce KPI dashboards, performance reports and management information;

  • oversee financial administration, payroll coordination, budgets, cashflow monitoring and financial controls;

  • support the CEO with forecasting, management accounts and organisational reporting;

  • lead HR systems covering recruitment, safer recruitment, contracts, induction, DBS, training, supervision and appraisal;

  • coordinate organisational marketing, branding, websites, social media, newsletters and impact reporting;

  • develop Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Planner, QuickBooks and other business systems;

  • maintain policies, procedures, SOPs, handbooks, templates and document-control systems;

  • coordinate quality assurance, internal audits, risk monitoring and Quality Improvement Plans;

  • manage the Receptionist/Administrator, Data & Finance Administrator, administrative volunteers and Business Support placements;

  • support the CEO, Trustees and Senior Leadership Team with accurate, timely and evidence-based reporting.


Who we are looking for

Learning Coordinator/Practical Tutor (Alternative Provision)


Sessional- Flexible hours: From one regular session to multiple sessions (5hrs per week up to 27.5hrs) DURING TERM TIME ONLY (36-38 weeks)

£25 per hour

Based in Rainworth, Nottinghamshire

The Social Action Hub is recruiting Learning Coordinators and Practical Tutors (roles can be combined) to help young people develop the vocational, personal and employability skills they need to progress into further learning, employment or a successful return to full-time education.


These are flexible roles working with small groups of between one and four young people who have additional learning, behaviour and support needs who have struggled with main stream education.


We are looking for people who can:

  • engage young people who may have struggled within mainstream education;

  • turn practical activities into purposeful learning;

  • plan and deliver structured group sessions;

  • coordinate an individual learning journey for each learner;

  • recognise, record and celebrate progress;

  • connect learning to employment, education and future opportunities.


You do not necessarily need to be a qualified teacher.

You may be an experienced:

  • workplace trainer or mentor;

  • youth worker;

  • vocational tutor;

  • teaching assistant;

  • learning coordinator;

  • employment adviser;

  • industry professional;

  • tradesperson;

  • community practitioner;

  • small-business owner;

  • practical-skills specialist.


What matters is that you can engage young people, teach skills safely and effectively, and understand how to plan, record and review an individual learning journey.


About the role


Our Alternative Provision learners benefit from small-group, practical and relationship-based learning.


As a Learning Coordinator/Tutor, you will take responsibility for a small cohort of up to four learners.


You will asses their needs, create a learning plan, coordinate their learning timetable, deliver practical learning directly and arrange contributions from other specialist tutors, associates, partners, where appropriate to ensure that the learner meets their goals and their learning plan is fully activated.


Although learners may participate in activities together, each young person will have their own:

  • starting points;

  • needs and required adjustments;

  • interests and aspirations;

  • Individual Learning Plan;

  • learning targets;

  • progress reviews;

  • record of participation and achievement;

  • planned progression route.


You will be responsible for ensuring that learning is planned, purposeful, recorded and connected to each young person’s longer-term goals, you will update partners, parents and schools on learner progress using the agreed templates and tools.


This learning is currently non-accredited and focuses on developing practical skills, confidence, communication, teamwork, independence, employability and readiness for the next stage. There is a portfolio for the learner to complete during the programme.


Practical learning in a real environment


This is not traditional classroom teaching, although a curriculum, scheme of work and session plans must be produced, learning takes place through real activities, projects, social enterprises, community services, educational visits and simulated workplace environments.


For example, a learner could develop skills through our School Uniform Exchange by:

  • checking the quality and condition of donated items;

  • sorting and organising stock;

  • creating product information;

  • labelling products;

  • using stock-control systems;

  • picking and packing orders;

  • preparing items for collection or delivery;

  • developing customer-service skills;

  • learning about teamwork, productivity and workplace standards.


The Learning Coordinator/Tutor could then broaden this into a wider programme exploring:

  • production and manufacturing;

  • warehousing and distribution;

  • the history of local industry;

  • the Industrial Revolution;

  • workplace health and safety;

  • different employment roles;

  • local factories and employers;

  • educational visits, including industrial heritage sites such as Cromford Mills and the Arkwright experience.


We will provide the curriculum framework, the resources, tools and templates you need and help develop the programme. You will provide the engagement, organisation, practical knowledge and ability to bring learning to life.


Areas of learning


We are interested in applicants who can coordinate or deliver learning in one or more of the following areas:

  • cooking and catering;

  • production, manufacturing and warehousing;

  • retail and customer service;

  • stock control, picking, packing and fulfilment;

  • DIY, maintenance and caretaking;

  • gardening and horticulture;

  • Forest School and outdoor learning;

  • youth work and personal development;

You can apply as a specialist in one subject or combine different topics if you have the skills and confidence to do so. We also welcome applications for a generic vocational role. In this role, you would deliver generic employment skills and learn one of The Social Action Hub’s existing business operations and turn it into a structured programme of practical learning for young people.


Learning Coordinator/Practical Tutor

The Learning Coordinator/Tutor will use recognised youth-work approaches, the National Youth Agency Curriculum, and Ofsted Standards to ensure that sessions rare effectively planned, purposeful and connected to each learner’s Individual Learning Plan.


Key responsibilities


You will:

  • coordinate the learning journey for a small cohort of up to four learners;

  • coordinate learner introductions, initial assessments and identification of starting points;

  • create and maintain an Individual Learning Plan for every learner;

  • agree meaningful and achievable learning and progression goals;

  • plan, prepare, deliver and evaluate structured practical-learning sessions;

  • deliver practical skills-based learning directly;

  • coordinate contributions from other practical tutors where appropriate for the learning plan;

  • create a balanced and engaging timetable for your learner group;

  • adapt learning for different needs, abilities, communication styles and levels of confidence;

  • use practical projects, visits and real working environments to make learning meaningful;

  • connect activities to future education, training and employment opportunities;

  • review learner progress and update targets;

  • record learning activity, participation, progress and achievement;

  • maintain accurate learner files and evidence;

  • complete online registers and attendance records;

  • use digital systems to update learner information;

  • contribute to progress reports for schools, commissioners, parents, carers and other professionals;

  • maintain appropriate professional boundaries;

  • follow safeguarding, Prevent, health and safety, equality, confidentiality and data-protection requirements;

  • identify and report safeguarding concerns immediately;

  • work positively with colleagues, tutors, schools, families and referring professionals.


Who we are looking for


You will need to demonstrate experience of:


  • engaging children or young people;

  • working with learners who may have additional needs or barriers to learning;

  • planning and delivering structured learning or developmental activities;

  • teaching, demonstrating or coaching practical skills;

Experience of Alternative Provision, special educational needs, youth work, employability, vocational learning or workplace training would be beneficial.


However, we are also interested in people from industry who have strong practical skills and can demonstrate the ability to engage, teach and support young people.

Pay: £25 per hour

Location: Rainworth Youth & Community Centre, Kirklington Road, Rainworth, with local community and educational visits

Learner group: Between one and four learners

Contract options: Employed or freelance arrangements may be available, subject to the requirements and status of the role

Working hours will be agreed according to the learner timetable, your availability and the subjects you can offer.


The allocation will include agreed time for:

  • session planning and preparation;

  • coordinating the learner timetable;

  • maintaining Individual Learning Plans;

  • reviewing progress;

  • updating learner records;

  • completing registers and evidence;

  • communicating with relevant colleagues and professionals.


Some applicants may deliver one regular programme each week. Others may combine several subject areas or learner groups to create a larger working pattern.


Safeguarding


The Social Action Hub is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.


Appointment will be subject to:

  • a satisfactory enhanced DBS check, including the appropriate barred-list check;

  • satisfactory references;

  • identity and right-to-work checks;

  • verification of relevant qualifications and experience;

  • completion of safeguarding, Prevent and organisational induction training.


Applicants who already hold an enhanced DBS certificate registered with the DBS Update Service should provide details when requested.


The selection process


Shortlisted applicants will be invited to take part in a practical selection session.

As part of the selection process, you will be asked to plan and teach us a practical skill in a session lasting up to 90 minutes. This could be any appropriate skill you are confident teaching.


We will be looking at:

  • how you introduce the activity;

  • how you structure the session;

  • how you explain and demonstrate the skill;

  • how you engage different learners;

  • how you check understanding;

  • how you adapt your approach;

  • how you manage health and safety;

  • how you recognise progress;

  • how you bring the session to a purposeful conclusion.


We are not expecting a polished performance. We want to see how you turn something you know into an engaging and structured learning experience. A clear brief will be provided in advance, and reasonable adjustments will be available.
